Special Education Teachers

Job Scope

Special Education Teachers use a range of specialised teaching programmes to cater to children with physical and/or intellectual disabilities, or children with 'special learning needs'. They train and provide guidance to the children, as well as evaluate their performance and progress. Their objective is to assist the children in their care to develop their capacity to the fullest potential, thereby enhancing their quality of lie and integrating them into mainstream society.

Special Education Teachers are found in rehabilitative services such as special education schools and Early Intervention Programmes for Infants and Children (EIPIC) centres.

Personal Qualities

Special Education Teachers require patience, understanding and dedication as the pupils may have one or more learning difficulties. Most importantly, they must have a passion and love for teaching children with special needs.

Minimum Requirements

To become a Special Education Teacher, one will need to possess a Diploma in Special Education (DISE) from the National Institute of Education (NIE).

Salary Range

Both graduates and non-graduates can apply to be a Special Education Teacher. Fresh graduates start at between $2,000 to $2,600 per month, depending on their qualifications. Non-graduates with ‘A’ levels or a Diploma salary range is between $1,360 to $1,730 per month.

Professional Development Opportunities

There are continuing education courses and seminars for Special Education Teachers. Degree and masters’ programmes are also available locally (SSTI) and overseas for upgrading. 

Special Education Teachers can become Senior Teachers and Heads of Department. With an advanced degree, they may be promoted to Principal of a Special Education School.
